Impatiens -- Perfect for Shady Gardens

Available in a rich selection of rich colors including red, purple, pink, orange, and white, Impatiens light up a shady corner like crazy! Plant them in spring and you’ll have nonstop color until autumn. Impatiens are especially beautiful in mass plantings, but they’re also happy serving as a flower bed edging. If you really want to add a spark, plant impatiens in front of shade-loving foliage plants like ferns or hostas. Of course, impatiens are also happy incontainers.

Some varieties are relatively sun-tolerant, especially in cool-summer climates. Don’t try growing them in bright afternoon sunlight though. It won’t work and they will expire quickly.

I planted two New Guinea impatiens this summer. I have to say, I really don’t like them as much as the good ol’, traditional impatiens, also known as “Busy Lizzie,” (or by their scientific name, Impatiens wallerina).
