Red Wigglers

My last post was many moons ago, but here I am again, armed with a new determination to move forward with my garden writing career, which has stalled. It's time for a jump start and a big ol' kick in the butt.

So, for my first post of the new year, let's get down and dirty! It's all about worms!

This weekend, I started a brand new worm bin with 1,000 squiggly little red wigglers. The vermicompost that resulted from last year's worms is so gorgeous and my flowers are going to love it. (If spring ever comes. It is coming, right?) Maybe I'll test it on my indoor plants first, but that's an idea for another blog!

So, my new little red wigglers are happily going about their business, chowing down on my bell pepper stems, leftover green beans, shriveled grapes, and other kitchen detritus.

I have to confess that my first batch of worms died last summer. I also have to confess that it was my fault. It wasn't intentional. It was a lack of understanding of how to migrate the worms successfully from one bin to another so I could harvest their poop.

Somehow, I think I managed to starve them. I knew they had passed to the Great Beyond when I discovered their little corpses pasted to the inside of their bin.

This year will be better. I will pay closer attention to my worms and their needs. I will be sure they have enough food. Most importantly, I will devise a new and better way to migrate them to a new bin when the time comes, and I will monitor them closely to be sure they are still alive and wiggling. I swear! I'll keep you posted!
